Vintage 1986 Baltic amber sterling silver ring, size 7, featuring glowing cognac amber, an ammonite fossil motif and sculptural Brutalist Modernist silverwork.
Some vintage jewelry is beautiful. Other pieces seem to carry a little piece of history with them. This 1986 Baltic amber ring feels like both.
At its heart is a rich cognac-coloured Baltic amber cabochon, glowing golden against the cool silver setting. Amber itself is ancient fossilized tree resin, treasured around the Baltic Sea for centuries and especially associated with the celebrated amber-working traditions of Poland.
Just beneath the amber is one of my favourite details: a beautifully formed ammonite fossil motif in silver. Pairing the ancient character of amber with the prehistoric spiral of an ammonite gives this ring such a thoughtful, almost poetic quality. It feels like a celebration of time, nature and everything the earth preserves.
The surrounding silver is wonderfully expressive, with organic droplets, dimensional texture and a substantial wide band. Its deliberately irregular, sculptural character reflects the Brutalist and Modernist aesthetic found in Polish studio jewelry of this period.
And then there is the date: 1986. Knowing exactly when this piece was made makes it feel even more special. Rather than simply being “vintage,” it belongs to a specific moment in jewelry history and has now survived four decades ready for its next chapter.
This isn’t a quiet little ring. It’s wearable sculpture—earthy, artistic, wonderfully unusual and unlikely to be mistaken for anything else.
